University of Nottingham’s SIAM & IMA Student Chapter

About Us

This is the official website for the University of Nottingham SIAM (Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics) and IMA (Institute of Mathematics and its Applications) Student Chapter.

Our mission is to promote research in applied maths and encourage communication and collaboration between mathematics, science, engineering and industry.

Oliver Cattell


Oliver is a first year PhD student in applied mathematics. His research focuses on mathematical neuroscience with a particular focus on applications to Epilepsy.

Alice Thompson


Alice is a first year PhD student in Epidemic Modelling, focusing on infectious disease outbreaks in hospitals. Her research involves the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods.

Robert Allen


Robert is a first year PhD student in Applied Mathematics. His research is focussing on Phase-Amplitude reductions of coupled oscillator networks used for modelling neurons in neuroscience.

Niamh Martin


Niamh is a first year PhD student in probability. Her research focuses on temporal effects in epidemic modelling.

Sonia Dari

Sonia is a first year PhD student in applied mathematics. Her research focuses on mathematically modelling wound healing using partial differential equations.

Liam Critcher

Committee Member

Liam is a first year PhD student working in applied probability. His research focuses on structured population epidemic models and herd immunity.

Tom Laird

Committee Member

Tom is a third year PhD student in Mathematical Physics. His research focuses on the relation between quantum mechanics and gravity.

Matteo Icardi

Faculty Advisor

Matteo is the committee's faculty advisor and an Assistant Professor in Applied Mathematics at the University of Nottingham.
